Refrigerator Energy Labelling
Refrigerator energy labelling is proposed to be implemented through the statutory powers of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution SLS 1230.
Features of SLS 1230 - Refrigerators
The energy efficiency standards for refrigerators are based on international standards (ISO 7371, As 2575.2 and AS 1430) and are modified to address Sri Lankan climatic conditions and market trends, such as requirements for climatic class ‘N’ in line with ISO i.e. 160C to 320C and market forces such as the need for faster ice making capabilities. The system is applicable for refrigerator classes 1-7.
The star rating is determined based on the Efficiency Rating, Er.

(Higher star ratings indicate greater energy efficiency)
Determination of the star rating is based on the following formula:
Er = EC/V1
V1 = Vf x Kf + Vc x Kc
Where,
Er = Efficiency Rating
EC = Energy Consumption in kWh/year
Vf = Volume of frozen food compartment
Vc = Volume of fresh food compartment
Kf = 32-Tf ; Tf = Temp. of frozen food compartment (0C)
Kc = 32-Tc ; Tc = Temp. of frozen food compartment (0C)
Calculation of Energy Consumption
If the refrigerator cycles, the energy consumed for a complete number of cycles and the corresponding time is determined using an Energy Meter and a timing device.
If the refrigerator does not cycle, either the time taken to consume at least 1 kWh or the energy consumed to operate for at least 16 hrs, whichever occurs first, is determined.
Energy Consumption for an annum is calculated, using the appropriate method above.
