The CEB Hydro Power Stations contributed 4289 GWh or 45.7% of energy during 2006. Hydro Power came from Mahaweli Complex, Laxapana Complex, Samanalawewa Power Station, Kukuleganga Power Station and three Mini Hydro Power Stations at Inginiyagala, Udawalawe and Nilambe. Small Hydro producers generated 346 GWh or 3.7% of energy during the year 2006.
The Kukule Ganga Hydro Power Plant with an installed capacity of 70 MW was commissioned and ceremonially opened on 19th September 2003. This is particularly a significant achievement which enhanced the CEB’s hydro generation capacity and is the first Hydro Power Plant commissioned after the commissioning of Samanalawewa Power Plant in 1992.
The construction of 150 MW Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project has already commenced.
The preliminary works comprising of construction of 495 houses for people who are to be displaced, more than 50 public & private buildings including, Urban Council Talawakele, Rest House, Cinema Hall, Tamil Maha Vidyalam, three Kovils, two Churches, etc has commenced. It also includes up-grading of 33 km road from Talawakele to Thawalantenna with the reconstruction of 14 bridges and deck culverts, 150 box culverts, construction of houses for project staff and two 33 KV power transmission lines.
The construction of Main Civil work including water diversion facilities (Weir) 12.9 km long Head race tunnel, the underground power cavern & other facilities has also commenced. Total donor contribution for the project is JY 33,265 Million and total government contribution is LKR 5,952 Million.
